What are the symptoms of gallstones?

Gallstones can cause pain in the abdomen, back, and right shoulder, as well as digestive problems. These symptoms may be more pronounced after meals or at night, and may also cause biliary colic, which requires prompt attention and management.

What are gallstones? In simple terms, gallstones are solid particles of matter that form in the gallbladder or bile duct. They may be made of cholesterol, bilirubin, or other substances. They are usually caused by an imbalance in the bile composition or the gallbladder not being able to empty fully. Most small gallstones do not cause obvious symptoms, but larger stones may cause acute or chronic symptoms that affect your normal life.

The symptoms caused by gallstones are mainly manifested as: first, severe pain in the upper abdomen or right upper abdomen, and the pain may also radiate to the back or right shoulder. This pain is medically known as biliary colic. It may also be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, indigestion, abdominal distension, fever and other symptoms. Sometimes, when stones block the bile duct, jaundice may also occur, that is, yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes. Although these symptoms will resolve on their own in some cases, repeated attacks may lead to serious complications such as cholecystitis and pancreatitis.

If you suspect you have gallstones, it is important to control your diet and avoid high-fat and high-cholesterol foods. At the same time, eating more fiber-containing foods helps keep your digestive tract healthy. If symptoms occur and persist, it is recommended to see a doctor as soon as possible so that imaging tests such as ultrasound can be performed to confirm the diagnosis and develop an appropriate treatment plan based on the situation. Avoid taking medication or folk remedies on your own without clear advice from a doctor to avoid delaying the condition or causing adverse reactions. Timely diagnosis and scientific management can usually effectively prevent serious problems caused by gallstones.
