What is glass man disease?

The term "glass man" sounds like it describes a person who is easily broken, but it actually refers to a rare medical disease called osteogenesis imperfecta. This disease mainly affects the human skeleton, making the bones very fragile and can cause fractures with the slightest impact. Imagine that it is like a bone made of glass, which can break with the slightest force.

Osteogenesis imperfecta is caused by a genetic mutation that affects the production of collagen. Collagen is one of the main building blocks of bones and is responsible for providing them with strength and elasticity. If the structure of collagen is not normal, bones become abnormally brittle. The severity of this disease varies from person to person. Some people may only experience a few fractures in their lifetime, while others may experience multiple fractures as early as infancy.

For people with fractures, extra care is required in life. Even daily activities, such as walking or a minor fall, can result in fractures. Patients often need to use assistive devices, such as wheelchairs or braces, to reduce the risk of fractures. To protect fragile bones, doctors may recommend physical therapy to increase muscle strength and coordination to provide better support for the bones.

In addition to physical therapy, medication is also an option. Bisphosphonates can help reduce the frequency of fractures while increasing bone density. However, these medications are not a complete cure for OI, but can only provide some relief from symptoms.

Although OI sounds scary, many patients are still able to live a fulfilling life with proper treatment and lifestyle adjustments. They may need more protective measures in their lives, but this does not prevent them from pursuing their dreams and goals. It is also crucial for every "glass person" to have a supportive network of family and friends, as psychological and emotional support is equally important. I hope that through this article, everyone can have a deeper understanding of "glass people" and can better understand and support them.
