What are benign lesions?

Benign lesions, as the name suggests, are those that do not cause serious harm to the body. They are not as invasive as malignant lesions and will not metastasize to other parts of the body. In simple terms, benign lesions are like "good neighbors" in the body. Although their presence may make you a little uncomfortable, they are usually not life-threatening.

When we talk about benign lesions, the most common example is benign tumors. Benign tumors are formed due to abnormal cell proliferation, but they grow slowly and do not invade surrounding tissues or metastasize to other places. For example, some small bumps on the skin, uterine fibroids, breast fibroids, etc. are all common forms of benign tumors. Although they are mostly harmless, they may sometimes cause inconvenience due to their location or size, such as compressing nerves or affecting organ function.

So, how do you determine whether a lesion is benign? Usually, doctors make a diagnosis through physical examination, imaging examinations (such as ultrasound, CT, MRI) and tissue biopsy. Benign lesions generally have clear boundaries and are clearly separated from surrounding tissues, while malignant lesions often have unclear boundaries and may infiltrate surrounding tissues.

Although benign lesions are usually not something to worry about, it does not mean that they can be taken lightly. Regular follow-up and monitoring are necessary because some benign lesions may become malignant under certain conditions. For example, some long-standing benign polyps may turn malignant after many years. Maintaining good living habits and regular health checks are the key to preventing and early detection of lesions.

In daily life, maintaining a healthy diet and exercising regularly can help maintain good health and reduce the chances of disease. For example, eating more fiber-rich foods, maintaining a good attitude, and avoiding smoking and excessive drinking are all effective measures to protect yourself from disease. Through these efforts, we can better manage and prevent benign diseases and maintain the health and vitality of the body.
