What to do if there is a lump in the breast during lactation

If lumps appear during lactation, timely measures should be taken, including hot compresses, massage, emptying milk, and antibiotic treatment if necessary. Mastitis lumps are mainly caused by milk stasis, bacterial infection or milk duct obstruction, and need to be treated according to different causes.

1. Hot compress and massage: Hot compress can promote blood circulation and relieve milk duct obstruction. Apply a warm towel to the breast lump for 15-20 minutes each time, 2-3 times a day. After the hot compress, gently massage the lump, pushing from the periphery of the breast toward the nipple to help the milk discharge.

2. Emptying the milk: Ensuring that the milk is fully emptied is the key to relieving the lumps. When breastfeeding, let the baby suck more on the affected breast, or use a breast pump to suck out the milk to avoid milk stasis. If the baby has difficulty sucking, you can try changing the breastfeeding position, such as the rugby position or side-lying position.

3. Antibiotic treatment: If the lump is accompanied by redness, swelling, fever or pain, it may be mastitis caused by bacterial infection, and you need to see a doctor in time. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics such as amoxicillin, cephalosporins or clindamycin. Take them as prescribed by the doctor and avoid stopping the medication on your own.

4. Dietary adjustment: Lactating women should maintain a balanced diet, drink plenty of water, and avoid high-fat foods. They can eat a moderate amount of fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C, such as oranges, kiwis, spinach, etc., to enhance immunity.

5. Pay attention to rest: Mastitis is closely related to physical fatigue. Breastfeeding women need to ensure adequate sleep and avoid overwork. Family members should share the childcare work to reduce the mother's stress.

If the lumps of mastitis during lactation are not treated in time, they may develop into abscesses and require surgical drainage. If the lumps persist or the symptoms worsen, you should seek medical attention immediately for professional examination and treatment. Lumps of mastitis during lactation require comprehensive treatment, including hot compresses, massage, emptying milk, antibiotic treatment, etc. At the same time, pay attention to diet and rest, and seek medical attention in time if necessary to avoid worsening of the condition.
