What is the probability of polyps becoming cancerous?

Whether a polyp will become cancerous depends on the type, size and growth period of the polyp. Some polyps do have a risk of becoming cancerous, such as adenomatous polyps, but not all polyps will develop into cancer.

Polyps are a common pathological growth, mainly abnormal tissue growth in the colon, stomach, nasal cavity, etc. Generally speaking, polyps can be divided into adenomatous, hyperplastic and inflammatory types. Adenomatous polyps are considered to have a tendency to become cancerous, especially adenomatous polyps larger than 1 cm, which have a higher chance of becoming cancerous, while hyperplastic and inflammatory polyps have a lower risk of becoming cancerous.

If adenomatous polyps are not discovered or removed for a long time, the probability of cancer may increase over time. Studies have found that it may take 10 years or even longer for adenomatous polyps to become cancerous, but its transformation is multifactorial, such as the number of polyps, family genetic history, and the patient's lifestyle. Chronic inflammation, irregular diet and other factors may also promote the cancer process.

If polyps are found during the examination, it is best not to ignore them. You should consult a doctor in time to determine their type and receive treatment or regular check-ups according to the doctor's advice. In daily life, a reasonable diet, eating more foods rich in dietary fiber, and controlling greasy and high-fat intake can help reduce the probability of polyp formation and cancer, and reduce health risks from the source.
