What to do for hydronephrosis in children

What to do for hydronephrosis in children

Children with hydronephrosis should undergo multiple examinations such as ultrasound and nuclear medicine imaging to determine the cause and extent and to allow for early intervention.

Hydronephrosis is a condition in which excessive fluid accumulates inside the kidneys due to the inability to drain urine. It is common in children. The cause may be congenital structural abnormalities, ureteral obstruction or other lesions. Depending on the severity, it will have different effects on kidney function.

Transabdominal ultrasound is the first choice to observe the size and shape of hydronephrosis. It is a non-invasive and radiation-free initial screening method. If a more detailed evaluation is required, nuclear medicine imaging (such as nephrography) can be further used to determine the functional status of the kidneys, and intravenous pyelography can be used to understand the detailed anatomical structure of the urinary tract. In some cases, other imaging examinations such as CT and MRI may be required to assist in diagnosis.

If you find related symptoms, such as less urine, frequent urinary tract infections, or swelling in the waist and abdomen, it is recommended to see a doctor as soon as possible for a clear diagnosis. If hydronephrosis is confirmed, follow the doctor's advice for examination and treatment. Surgery or medication can improve the condition and avoid further kidney damage. Parents should pay close attention to their children's urination and check them regularly.
