Symptoms and treatment of perianal abscess

A perianal abscess is a common infection of the soft tissues around the anus and rectum that usually causes severe pain and swelling.

The main symptoms of perianal abscess include severe pain around the anus that tends to get worse over time, especially during bowel movements. The perianal area may be red, swollen or hard and very painful to the touch. Some patients may experience systemic symptoms such as fever and chills.

Treatment for perianal abscesses mainly involves surgical drainage, which is currently the most effective treatment. During surgery, the doctor will make a small incision at the abscess and drain the pus to relieve pain and eliminate infection. After surgery, patients usually need to take antibiotics to prevent further spread of infection. For smaller abscesses, symptoms can sometimes be relieved by local warm compresses and antibiotic treatment, but this method is relatively ineffective and prone to recurrence.

Patients should keep the anus clean, change underwear frequently, and avoid straining during bowel movements to reduce the chance of infection. In terms of diet, they should eat more fiber-rich foods to keep bowel movements smooth and avoid constipation.

If you experience symptoms such as perianal pain, swelling, and fever, be sure to seek medical attention as soon as possible to avoid worsening symptoms and more serious complications. Follow your doctor's advice during treatment and have regular checkups to ensure that your condition is under effective control.
