Why is anal abscess so painful?

The reason why perianal abscesses cause severe pain is mainly because the infection in the abscess causes local tissue swelling, nerve compression and inflammatory response. This situation needs to be treated as soon as possible, otherwise it may cause serious complications or even systemic infection.

Perianal abscess is a suppurative disease caused by bacterial infection of the perianal soft tissue. The pain comes from the accumulation of pus and the stimulation of inflammation on tissues and nerves. In the early stages of the disease, people may feel swelling and persistent dull pain in the perianal area. Once the abscess is further formed, the pain will rapidly increase, and symptoms such as redness, swelling, fever, and anal throbbing pain may appear. This infection is usually related to blockage of anal glands, bacterial invasion of wounds, or a weak immune system. Common risk factors include long-term constipation, diarrhea, anal fissures, postoperative infections, and diabetes. Early abscesses may be limited to a small area, but if not intervened in time, they may spread to deeper tissue spaces and even cause anal fistulas.

The most direct way to relieve perianal abscess is surgical drainage, especially for more severe abscesses. Common surgical methods include perianal abscess incision and drainage, laser drainage, and radical abscess removal. After surgery, close attention should be paid to wound care and dressings should be changed frequently to prevent recurrence of infection. At the same time, antibiotic treatment, such as cephalosporins combined with metronidazole, can effectively control the infection. Patients with mild abscesses in the early stages can try sitting baths, soaking the anus in warm salt water, or taking Chinese herbal baths to relieve pain and inflammation. Dietary adjustment is also very important to promote recovery. You can consume more fiber-rich foods such as whole grains, vegetables and fruits, reduce the intake of high-fat and spicy foods, and help improve intestinal health and bowel movements.

In daily life, maintaining good hygiene habits and regular bowel movements are essential for preventing perianal abscesses. When severe perianal pain occurs, do not squeeze or delay it privately, and seek medical attention as soon as possible to avoid delaying the condition. Caring about your own health is actually responsible for your family and quality of life. Solving the problem in time can help you return to normal life as soon as possible.
