What are the symptoms of lumbar tuberculosis?

Lumbar tuberculosis is a relatively rare but serious disease caused by infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Patients often experience pain in the lower back, which is one of the most common symptoms. The pain may be constant and worse at night or after activity. Imagine that it is as if you are carrying a heavy stone on your back, and no matter how you adjust your posture, you can't get relief.

In addition to pain, lumbar tuberculosis may cause localized swelling and tenderness. Patients sometimes notice a noticeable lump in the lumbar area that is sensitive to the touch. This swelling is due to an inflammatory response to the infection, similar to the swelling we see with a sprain.

As the disease progresses, lumbar tuberculosis may affect the nervous system, causing weakness or numbness in the lower limbs. This is because spinal lesions may compress the nerve roots and hinder the transmission of nerve signals. Imagine that the wires are compressed and the current cannot pass smoothly, so the light bulb will flicker or even go out.

In some severe cases, patients may experience systemic symptoms such as fever, night sweats, and weight loss. These symptoms are similar to other types of TB and are the body's systemic response to the TB infection. Just like on a hot summer day, the body regulates its temperature by sweating, but in this case, the sweating is an abnormal response to the infection.

If you suspect you have symptoms of lumbar tuberculosis, it is very important to seek medical attention promptly. Doctors usually use imaging examinations and laboratory tests to confirm the diagnosis and develop a personalized treatment plan based on the condition. Early diagnosis and treatment can effectively reduce the occurrence of complications and improve the quality of life. Remember, health is our most precious wealth, and any discomfort deserves attention.
